Abstract

Abstract:

This article is an annotated version of a course I designed after attending the NEH Institute, "Arts of Survival: Recasting Lives in African Cities." I taught the class as a small seminar during the UC Santa Cruz 2017 Summer Session, in the department of History of Art and Visual Culture (HAVC). In the summer, UC Santa Cruz's normally ten-week courses are compressed down to five weeks. As such, what would be a week of two or three classes during the regular quarter is taught in a single three-and-a-half-hour session. In this article, I first provide the parameters and justifications for the course; I then move through the syllabus, providing key questions for each class session and an instructor's note suggesting how that session could be improved in future iterations; I conclude with a reflection on the overall course.
