Abstract

Abstract:

In this article, I consider the short-lived fan campaign #1BillionForThriller, which attempted to garner one billion views of Michael Jackson's Thriller video on the official Jackson YouTube channel in 2018. Considering the affordances specific to YouTube as a platform alongside ongoing public reckoning of Jackson's legacy, I argue that the contradictory simultaneity characteristic of the living dead zombie is a useful framework through which these topics can be understood. YouTube as a platform exacerbates the opacity of Jackson's image, because the platform layers time, content, and contexts such that they become even more indistinguishable from one another than they already are in cultural memory.
