Abstract

Abstract:

Former artistic director of SummerWorks, and current producer of CanadaHub at the Edinburgh Festival, Michael Rubenfeld interrogates the contemporary theatre ecology in Canada, arguing that international presentation, especially for challenging work, benefits Canadian artists. Rubenfeld examines different theatre festivals and formats and the importance of collaborating with producers and venues that can help Canadian artists to connect with their audiences--which may not be in Canada. He suggests that it is essential that producers take the time to understand the ideological, physiological, and spiritual aspects of particular festivals and venues so that they may program and present artists whose work will resonate within these contexts.
