From the Black Arts Movement to the Contemporary Chitlin’ Circuit: An Interview with Woodie King Jr.

Forsgren and Obie Award winning producer Woodie King, Jr. discuss the challenges and triumphs of being a black theatre producer during the nineteen-sixties, the mission of the New Federal Theatre (1970–), the contributions and (at times) erasure of black women artists of the Black Arts Movement (1965–1976), and the current state of black theatre in the United States. King asserts here that black theatres of today need to acquire multiple sources of funding and afford more opportunities for black women artists to ensure the development and continuation of African American theatre.
