O presente da ficção histórica: A nação reconfigurada em quatro adaptações audiovisuais de O tempo e o vento

Este artigo desenvolve uma análise comparativa entre a trilogia O tempo e o vento (1949–1961), de Erico Verissimo, e quatro de suas adaptações audiovisuais, produzidas entre 1956 e 2013. Empregando uma metodologia e um enquadramento teórico multifacetados tendo por base a análise literária, os estudos de cinema e a teoria da adaptação, eu examino como essas quatro adaptações transmidiáticas divergem nitidamente na maneira em que cada uma se apropria da matéria ficcional do romance de Verissimo, reencena o passado histórico e concebe a nação. A partir da ideia de que qualquer narrativa histórica ficcional apreende o passado sob a ótica de seu tempo e as circunstâncias de sua fatura, este ensaio procura compreender os diferentes sentidos políticos e ideológicos atribuídos ao mito de origem formulado por Verissimo em cada uma das quatro adaptações audiovisuais. Argumento que o estudo das releituras audiovisuais do romance de Erico Verissimo permite vislumbrar importantes rotações da recente trajetória político-ideológica brasileira.

This article proposes a comparative analysis of the trilogy O tempo e o vento (Time and the Wind, 1949–1961) by Erico Verissimo and four of its audiovisual adaptations, produced between 1956 and 2013. Employing a multifaceted methodology and theoretical framework that draws from literary analysis, film studies, and the theory of adaptation, I examine how these four trans-medial adaptations diverge greatly in the way that they approach the fictional material in Verissimo's novel, reenact the historical past and conceptualize the nation. Subscribing to the idea that any given fictional historical narrative reads the past from the perspective of the actual circumstances of its production, this article seeks to understand the different political and ideological meanings assigned by each of these audiovisual interpretations to the myth of the origin of the nation as formulated by Verissimo. The study of the audiovisual rereadings of Verissimo's novel, I argue, serves as a window to understand important changes in the recent Brazilian political and ideological trajectory.
