THE ASSOCIATION

The Southern Historical Association will hold its eighty-fifth annual meeting in Louisville, Kentucky, November 7–10, 2019, in our regular Thursday through Sunday schedule. Printed programs will be mailed to members later in the month, but details are already accessible at the SHA website (thesha.org/annual-meeting), where you will find meeting highlights and information on the tours and off-site functions organized by the Local Arrangements Committee, co-chaired by Glenn Crothers and Tracy K'Meyer. The Galt House Hotel will serve as our headquarters hotel.

This year's Graduate Student Luncheon will explore several themes, including teaching in the digital age; writing grant applications; doing archival research; becoming a public historian; and doing digital history. (Suggestions for other topics are welcome.) Graduate students will choose their preferred topic and be seated with relevant experts from a variety of backgrounds for intense, small-group discussions. To ensure that groups cohere, and because space is limited, SHA's Graduate Student Council asks that interested graduate students preregister for the luncheon by sending a short (150–200 word) abstract on their topic of choice and c.v. to shagraduatecouncil@gmail.com by October 15. Registrants are encouraged to rank their table choices. Participants must be members of the Southern Historical Association. Professors, editors, and other professionals in history who are interested in providing advice to graduate students on any of these topics are also invited to sign up for the luncheon. All graduate students and junior faculty members (within three years of completion of their doctorates) who are presenting at this year's meeting are encouraged to submit their papers for consideration for the William F. Holmes Award. To be considered, papers should be submitted via email to manager@thesha.org by October 1, 2019. Each entry should have a cover sheet that includes the author's name, the paper title, and the institution at which the author is employed or is in residence as a doctoral candidate along with the expected month and year of graduation. This year's award committee consists of William Blair, Pennsylvania State University, chair; Scott Huffard, Lees-McRae College; and Yael Sternhell, Tel Aviv University. The 2020 Program Committee, co-chaired by Kendra Taira Field, Tufts University; Joseph P. Reidy, Howard University; and Randy J. Sparks, Tulane University, has issued a call for papers for the eighty-sixth annual meeting, which will be held in Memphis, Tennessee, November 19–22, 2020. All submissions should be made electronically at thesha.org/proposals. The deadline for submissions is September 15, 2019. As a reminder, the SHA's Executive Council recently modified one of its rules for program participants. Formerly the Association observed what is often called the "two-year off" rule, which required individuals who had been on a particular program to sit out the next two meetings. The new rule makes an exception for chairs and commentators, who are only required to sit out one year. The Association strongly encourages proposals that reflect racial, gender, and institutional diversity. Individuals interested in finding prospective co-panelists may do so through SHA's online partner, H-South.

The SHA Nominating Committee for 2019, consisting of Gaines Foster, Louisiana State University, chair; Talitha LeFlouria, University of Virginia; Adrienne Petty, College of William and Mary; Aaron Sheehan-Dean, Louisiana State University; and Christina Snyder, Pennsylvania State University, calls for recommendations from the SHA membership for the office of vice president/president-elect and for members of the Executive Council. The committee will finalize and announce its nominees at the meeting in Louisville. Recommendations for vice president/president-elect should take the form of letters of recommendation detailing the significance of the nominee's scholarship and service to the SHA and should be sent to Gaines Foster, History Department, 224 Himes Hall, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA 70803. Postcard forms included in the program can be used to recommend nominees for the Executive Council.
