¿Qué bizarrías son las de Belisa?: Hacia un ethos cortesano femenino en Las bizarrí de Belisa

In explanations of lope's alliterative title Las bizarrías de Belisa, critics have largely paid attention to the meaning of bizarría as ostentation. Yet, in fact, the word encompasses a broader set of meanings, such as valor, arrojo, or desorden. this article explores how the diverse meanings of bizarría and the adjective bizarro/a function and interact, since ostentation is only one aspect of these elements. In the pages that follow, i analyze the complexity of Belisa's bizarrías to understand the courtly ethos revealed in her actions as well as the other characters' views and opinions about them. Ultimately, i find that the character of Belisa sums up ideals of female courtliness in lope's Madrid. Although the playwright attempted to offer that female portrait long before, he only succeeded in capturing this figure with many layers in this late masterpiece, presumably the last comedia he wrote.
