Abstract:

Based on baptismal records, the essay traces eighteenth-century church affiliation among African Americans. Particularly in comparison to patterns of the nineteenth century, the investigation reveals surprising results. The story of African American affiliation with Lutheran congregations is especially a story of missed opportunities, as membership statistics of the early nineteenth century reveal.
