Urban Space: Contesting Inequality and Constructing Citizenship in the Lusophone World

Devoted to the Lusophone world, this special section investigates the strategies of resistance crafted by local, national and transnational actors. Using the city as an analytical framework, the articles provide an insight on the ways in which Portuguese-speaking cultural works and social movements have represented the city in recent decades. The articles investigate how new cultural producers reorient codes of difference and belonging related to the representational and material contexts in which they are produced. The articles examine the various forces and the economic system producing and sustaining social polarization and different spheres of exclusion. The city thus emerge as a political space where a multiplicity of perspectives, needs and interests are intertwined with demands for more inclusive forms of governance. One can argue that the struggle for the right to intervene in the reinvention process of a city functions as a vehicle of political empowerment that aims to forge a more equalitarian society.

Dedicada ao mundo lusófono, esta seção especial investiga as estratégias de resistência utilizadas por atores locais, nacionais e transnacionais. Usando a cidade como um marco analítico, os artigos fornecem uma nova perspectiva sobre a forma pelas quais as produções culturais em língua portuguesa e os movimentos sociais têm representado a cidade nas últimas décadas. Os artigos investigam como novos produtores culturais reorientam códigos de diferença e pertencimento tendo em vista os contextos representacionais e materiais em que foram produzidos. Os artigos examinam a forma como as várias forças e o sistema econômico tem produzido e sustentado a polarização e a exclusão social. A cidade surge assim como um espaço político onde uma multiplicidade de perspectivas, necessidades e interesses estão entrelaçados a demandas por formas mais inclusivas de governança. Pode-se argumentar que a luta pelo direito de intervir no processo de reinvenção da cidade funciona como um veículo de empoderamento político que visa forjar uma sociedade mais igualitária.
