Mémoirs, mis memorias

RESUMEN:

Hacía muchos años que tenía entre manos este proyecto de escribir mis memorias, pero por falsa modestia no me atrevía a emprenderlo. La chispa prendió durante dos encuentros con el querido amigo, el historiador Lou Pérez. Primero en septiembre de 2014 y posteriormente en el otoño de 2015. Fue así que, al inicio de enero de 2016, reaccioné y comencé a descargar mi memoria, sentado en mi casa de La Habana casi a orillas del mar, acompañado casi siempre de los disímiles sonidos del ambiente habanero que contribuyeron irremediablemente al flujo de recuerdos, anécdotas e ideas. Oportunamente, me había disculpado con mi amigo Alejandro de la Fuente por no haber podido corresponder a su amable invitación para participar en el simposio de Harvard acerca del movimiento afrocubano, de abril de 2017. En consecuencia, Alejandro de la Fuente me pidió que sometiera un texto apropiado para ser incluido en este singular volumen. Es así que decidí darle la primicia de este borrador.

I have been thinking about writing mis memorias (my memoir) for a while, but due to false modesty, I didn't dare. Two meetings with my dear friend, the historian Lou Perez, produced the spark. First, during a conference in September 2014, and later during the fall of 2015. But it wasn't until January 2016 that I started to pour out my memoirs, in my house in Havana near the sea, together with Havanan sounds in the background that brought me back memories, anecdotes and ideas. I had been informed my friend Alejandro de la Fuente not to attend to his kindly invitation to the Harvard symposium about the Afro-Cuban movement. Consequently, Alejandro de la Fuente asked me to submit an essay to be included in this special issue. So I decided to give him the premiere of my draft.
