Abstract

Abstract:

This essay explores the intersection of Black queer art and filmmaking in 1980s New York. The author describes his personal and professional journey as he leaves behind "The Plan" to become a doctor and pursue photography across the globe. His reflections provide rare insight into the diasporic communities that cut across the artistic landscape of New York at the time. Further, this essay establishes a network of critical players who engaged socially and artistically, including Pearl Bowser, Ellis Haizlip, and Louis Massiah, as well as WNET and the Schomburg Center.
