Abstract

Abstract:

This article takes as its focus Guadalupe García McCall's novel Under the Mesquite. In my analysis of nature and environmental themes, I examine the ways that the protagonist Lupita learns to admire and rely on the landscape found in her South Texas home, especially the rugged mesquite. In seeking out nature and plant life that are native to South Texas, I argue, Lupita discovers her distinctly Chicana/Tejana identity, which is heavily influenced by this acceptance of and appreciation for the Southwest landscape of her birth.
