Music & Science. Edited by Ian Cross (Editor-in-Chief), Graham Welch, and Adam Ockelford. Published continuously online. Vol. 1 (January–December 2018). ISSN 2059-2043. Online format. http://journals.sagepub.com/home/mns.

Music & Science is a new open access, peer-reviewed journal published by SAGE in association with SEMPRE. The journal is based on "the idea that science – or, more accurately, the sciences – can help us to make sense of music and its significance in our lives."

The scope of Music & Science is very broad in coverage, including studies in cognition, neuroscience, and psychoacoustics; development and education; philosophy and aesthetics; ethnomusicology and music sociology; archaeology and ethology; music theory, analysis, and historical studies; performance science and practice-based research; computational approaches and studies in digital culture; acoustics, sound studies, and soundscape studies; music therapy; and clinical implications and approaches, including psychoneuroimmunology, health, and well-being. Despite this wide scope, the journal is unified in that each research article included involves the application or the consideration of scientific method in relation to music.

The goal of Music & Science is to be "truly interdisciplinary." Examples of articles published in the inaugural volume of Music & Science include: "Health Problems of Orchestral Musicians from a Life-Span Perspective," "Music Genre Induced Driver Aggression," "Understanding Music-Selection Behavior via Statistical Learning," "Musician Interaction via Social Networking Sites," and "Rethinking the Role of Music in the Neurodevelopment of Autism Spectrum Disorder." Due to the broad scope of this journal, there is bound to be at least one article of interest to a potential reader.

Articles have no set length, and the online format allows articles to include a variety of supplementary material, including datasets, podcasts, videos, and images. Authors are particularly encouraged to include a podcast [End Page 542] appropriate for a non-specialist audience that summarizes their research, its significance, and its potential impact. Eight months into publication, the majority of the journal consists of research articles. At the time of writing, the first volume of Music & Science consists of 23 articles, 2 book reviews, 1 conference report, 1 conference review, and 1 commentary.

Music & Science is continuously published. Articles go through a double-blind peer review process and are published online immediately upon acceptance, with the reviewers' names listed. All content is free to access and is published under a Creative Commons license that allows others to reuse the work without permission as long as the work is properly referenced and the use is non-commercial.

Publication costs are covered by article processing charges paid by each author upon their article's acceptance. The article processing charge, which was waived for the first year, is now £400, although there is a 50% discount for members of SEMPRE.

While SAGE currently publishes journals in music psychology (Psychology of Music) and music education (Research Studies in Music Education), Music & Science complements and broadens their publishing portfolio in the area of music.

Music & Science is indexed in Ulrich's and a bibliographic record is available in WorldCat (OCLC #1030129555).
