Abstract

Abstract:

"Lucrece" takes its theme from the ekphrastic episode in Shakespeare's "The Rape of Lucrece" in which Lucrece gazes at the image of Hecuba in a painting about the fall of Troy. The poem becomes a meditation on the problems of scholarship-both the reading poems and the analysis of pictures.
