Abstract

Abstract:

In this short story, Judith and her husband Zvi are displaced persons who lost their families during the war. Judith, a former partisan, was famous throughout Poland for her work with munitions. The couple arrives in New York and are housed on Long Island. There, Judith suffers the last of many miscarriages. She struggles to deal with her losses, to construct a peacetime identity in a new land, and to live in an alien community that she perceives as sterile.
