Abstract:
The continuously growing success of superhero genres around the world raises the question of representation of diversity in a heroic universe dominated by Western imaginaries. Most recently, young African artists, mainly from Nigeria and South Africa, are creating a universe with local, mainly mystic, references, so that the figure of the superhero can be a model of creativity for local solutions. As other countries are rarely mentioned, the second part of this article discusses examples drawn from Francophone countries that share a critical approach toward the superhero narrative while offering some models as reference.
