Abstract

Abstract:

This piece discusses William Wilkins, the Dublin poet and schoolteacher mentioned briefly in the 'Nausicaa' episode of Ulysses, by reporting on items in the Maurice Wilkins archive of King's College London. After providing a background to the Wilkins family and William Wilkins especially, it discusses a postcard which ended up in Maurice's possession and offers some suggestions for why Joyce featured William in the novel. It ends with a short reflection on Joyce's creative practices when featuring real individuals and stories.
