Abstract:

William George Stirling joined the Malayan Civil Service in 1909 and worked in the Monopolies and Customs Services Department and the Chinese Protectorate. Stirling was a member of the Straits Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society and contributed six articles to the society’s journal. He wrote and illustrated several books on Malaya and illustrated an edition of the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám published in Singapore by the Lotus Library in 1918. After retiring from the civil service in 1932, he returned to England where he developed a reputation as a painter and sculptor.
