Abstract

Abstract:

This issue of The Tocqueville Review/La Revue Tocqueville (vol. XXXIX- n° 2–2018) is dedicated to two men, Raymond Aron and Stanley Hoffmann, who embodied the transatlantic intellectual ethos—and especially the Franco-American connection—that has marked the journal for a half century. In their attempts to define and criticize the theory and practice of international relations, both worked at the intersection of political science, history, sociology, and philosophy. Both were public intellectuals with audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. And both were legendary teachers.
