Anagoge/Archetype in Arms and the Man: Shaw, Virgil, and Jung

This is the fourth and final section of an article published in part in SHAW 37.1 paralleling Shaw's early "crowd pleaser" with Virgil's Aeneid. The four sections—Literal, Allegorical, Moral, and now Anagogical—suggest Shaw had epic in mind as he depicted the assembling of a hero that Shaw in a few years would be referring to as a Superman whose fourfoldedness echoes not only the epic hero's development but also Jung's "quaternity"—the process of individuation that ripens into the harmony of self symbolized by the circle of the mandala, crossed into four equal segments by two superimposed bars, a symbol that closes this four-sectioned article.
