Abstract

Abstract:

Après la Guerre is an ekphrastic attempt to enter Marc Chagall’s painting, La Guerre. Images such as the goat, village and flames are recurrent elements in Chagall’s work, and serve as touchstones and characters for the poem. Après L’Exode is an ekphrastic attempt to engage with Marc Chagall’s painting, L’Exode. Chagall’s image intersects with underlying ideas of imagination, art and the role of religion in historical trauma. Children are particularly vulnerable victims of any conflict, spurring the juxtaposition of war with nursery rhyme.
