Jenkins, former director of the Center for Children's Books and associate professor emerita in the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois, joins leading expert in the field of YA, Michael Cart, in this comprehensive examination of LGBTQ+ representation in young adult literature over the last fifty years in a followup to their The Heart Has Its Reasons: Young Adult Literature with Gay/Lesbian/Queer Content, 1969-2004. The book is divided into two sections: first a survey of LGBTQ+ literature separated by decades, documenting the historical context of the progress (and various setbacks) of LGBTQ+ presence in YA and focusing specifically on major watershed titles as well as books characteristic of the decade. The second part, "Breaking Down Barriers," looks at current trends, such as representation in graphic novels and the continual changes in nonfiction books focused on LGBTQ+ issues. Jenkins and Cart approached their research with a three-pronged model, examining homosexual visibility, gay assimilation, and queer consciousness/community in selected books. Appendices include a bibliography, graphs of portrayals of LGBTQ+ youth in YA, a list of book awards, and an explanation of the authors' research framework. An index is provided. KQG
