SECOLAS GENERAL MEETING Friday, April 18, 2008 5:30 PM Ybor City, Florida MINUTES Paula Heusinkveld called the meeting to order at 5:30 PM. Introduction of Executive Committee and Officers 1. Approval of Minutes from 2007 executive meeting in San José, Costa Rica • Unanimously approved. 2. Reports a. Financial report – Angela Herren, Secretary/ Treasurer • Angela Herren reported that the organization is financially healthy with $49,669.49 total in the treasury. The expense of producing and distributing the journals has transitioned over to Blackwell and SECOLAS will no longer handle that money. We have had some out of the ordinary expenses this year, such as lawyer fees for reviewing the Blackwell contract, however we have still seen a modest gain for the year. Now that we are paying a flat fee to Blackwell for each individual membership, most of the dues income will be going to Blackwell. b. Report from editor of The Latin Americanist – Greg Weeks) Update on the relationship with Blackwell • Jurgen presents for Greg Weeks on TLA. Blackwell is promoting the journal. Should greatly expand circulation of the journal. • We now reimburse Wiley-Blackwell for individual memberships. We make profit after revenue is above $150,000 per year. • Two constitutional changes have been passed. Bid for Journal has been changed to take place one year ahead of time to allow, $10K annual for bids. Also Annals has been folded into the Journal TLA. • There is a delay in Annals production this year because of changes with Blackwell. • We will be going to four issues. Beginning 2009 we will go to a four issue per year journal. There will be two special issues: 2009 Cuba and its revolution; 2010 Mexican Revolution issue; after 2010 there will be three regular issues and one special. • Call for pre-1999 copies of the journal for digitizing. 3.
