196 The Latin Americunist 9 Fall 2006 NEWS & NOTICES: AWARDS The Sturgis Leavitt Prize The $200.00 prize is awarded annually for the best article published by a SECOLAS member on a Latin American or Iberian subject. It will be awarded in 2007 for an article published between April 1, 2005 and December 3 1, 2006. The article may be in English, French, Portuguese or Spanish. Preference may be given to articles that have an appeal beyond a single discipline. The paper must be presented at the meeting to be eligible for the prize. The winning paper will be published in the 2007 Annals and its author will be awarded a monetary prize of $100.00. Thomas Book Award was established by the Southeastern Council of Latin American Studies (SECOLAS) to honor the labors and contributions of Alfred Barnaby Thomas, one of its founders and long-time supporters. He died in December 1990, at the age ofninety-four. The policies of the award process are as follows: The award will be $500.00 9 The committee may select two honorable mentions Applicants must have been members of SECOLAS for two years in order to have their work considered Co-authored works will be acceptable but anthologies and edited works will not The book’s theme must be Latin American or Iberian The award will be given annually Committee members will be three in number, always having at least one non-Thomas, non-historian Books for consideration must be sent to each of the committee members by December 1st of the year prior to the award (books may not be returned) Eligible books must have been published in either 2005 or 2006.
