Representations of a German in the Service of the Portuguese Court: The Luso-American Cartography and Colonial Urbanism

Partindo do trabalho de cartografia do engenheiro militar, o alemão Gaspar João Geraldo de Gronsfeld (1716–1779), este estudo analisa a representação da Amazônia na segunda metade do século XVIII, a partir de seus dois projetos de fortificação e demarcação na cidade de Belém, capital do antigo estado do Grão-Pará. Foi necessário uma investigação sobre a formação intelectual de Gronsfeld às faces da ilustração franco-alemã, os seus contatos com o mundo Portugués e sua participação na Expedição Demarcadora de Limites do territôrio luso-americano no norte do Brasil (1753–1779). A partir desta experiéncia de Gronsfeld, foi feita uma leitura gráfica, conceitual e histôrica dos mais importantes projetos de fortificação para a defesa de Belém, como parte da anãlise da histôria intelectual e imagens da época da Amazônia Colonial.

Starting from the cartography work of the military engineer, the German Gaspar João Geraldo de Gronsfeld (1716–1779), this study analyses the Amazonian representation in the second half of the XVIII century, from his two projects of fortification and demarcation in the city of Belém, in Pará, Brazil. To attempt this, it was necessary an investigation of the intellectual education of Gronsfeld in the boards of the German and French illustration, his contacts with the Portuguese world and his participation in the Demarcation Expedition of the Portuguese Territory in the north of Brazil (1753–1779). From this Gronsfeld experience, I did a graphic, conceptual and historical reading of the most important fortification projects to the defense of Belém, as part of the analysis of the intellectual and imagery history of the Colonial Amazonian time.
