Abstract:
This essay considers the need for transgender studies classrooms to balance students' sincere investment in identity terminology with broader pedagogical goals that take all such terminology as contingent. Placing this question in the context of current political turmoil and material violence that always inform the classroom, the essay not only suggests some concrete pedagogical approaches but also points to why negotiating this balance remains politically and intellectually critical for transgender studies.
