abstract:
The American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE) was founded in 1948 to assist Americans in obtaining their permission to conduct research in Egypt. By the 1960s ARCE expanded its mission to include a fellowship program, and in the 1990s, ARCE again expanded its mission to include an ambitious program of monument conservation and personnel training. Since 1995 ARCE’s efforts, in collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development USAID and Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities, have resulted in more than 70 successful projects. This article discusses how these programs—sponsored archaeology, fellowships, conservation and personnel training, and community outreach—connect people to promote scholarship, preserve cultural heritage, and present a positive cultural presence for the United States in Egypt.
