On Understanding the Experience of Syrian Refugees Through an Autoethnographic Lens

In this essay, I apply autoethnography as a research methodology as I unpack and reflect on my personal lived experience as a Syrian immigrant in order to better understand the experience of the Syrian refugees today. In this autoethnographic exercise, I undertake three steps: I first delve into my personal lived experience and dig through the layers and in between the folds of my heart and my father's. I then explore the Palestinian refugee's lived experience by drawing from Palestinian literature and looking at their produced works as autoethnographic narratives. Finally, I look for connections between my own experience as an immigrant and that of the Palestinian refugee to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a Syrian refugee today.

Dans cet article, j'utilise l'autoethnographie comme méthode de recherche pour mettre en avant mon expérience personnelle et refléter sur mon vécue en tant qu'immigrée Syrienne afin de mieux comprendre la réalité des réfugiés Syriens d'aujourd'hui. J'aborde ce texte auto-ethnographique en trois étapes: en premier, j'analyse mon propre vécue et fouille les couches et recoins de mon coeur aussi bien que ceux de mon père. Ensuite, j'explore l'expérience vécue par les réfugiés Palestiniens à partir d'extraits littéraires palestiniens et je consulte leurs oeuvres publiées comme histoires auto-ethnographiques. Finalement, j'essaie de trouver les points communs entre mon expérience en tant qu'immigrée et celle des réfugiés Palestiniens dans le but d'obtenir une meilleure compréhension de ce que cela signifie d'être un réfugié Syrien aujourd'hui.
