Abstract:
This article argues for innovative techniques to engage, mentor, motivate, and support first-generation underrepresented students of color and counteract the prevailing myth that high SAT scores, high GPAs, and extracurricular activities ensure a bachelor’s degree. Examples discussed include radical and interdisciplinary classroom activities, cultural and home-based pedagogies, and socially engaged projects.
