When Anouk and her fellow servant find their mistress murdered, they flee into the streets of modern day Paris, assuming that they will be blamed for the crime. Unfortunately, being falsely accused is just one of Anouk's worries; she's got three days to find a witch that will keep her human by continuing the enchantment that their powerful mistress had used to transform Anouk and her "Beastie" friends from animals into people. The world of magic, however, is in political turmoil, with its rulers shifting alliances and betraying their principles, making it impossible for Anouk to know whom to trust, especially as her newly developing magical abilities are revealed to those who would use her skills for harm. The elegance of the Parisian setting pairs perfectly with this carefully crafted story of magic, power, and high society, and the idea that all of this is going on with humans none the wiser gives the story an intriguing, almost titillating appeal. Anouk moves from meek servant to formidable leader quickly, but it's a transformation authentic to the situation, as she's racing against the clock to save her humanity. The breakneck speed is effectively balanced with rich characterization, making this an exceptional blend of fantasy, action, and emotional drama. KQG
