How did booksellers make money selling fiction in the long eighteenth century? Unlike other genres, fiction had no established market. Through a quantitative analysis of fiction imprints and a qualitative analysis of advertisements and other evidence, this essay argues that booksellers in the eighteenth century created the idea of a separate fiction market long before such specialization was financially sustainable. They also adopted a variety of tactics, including marketing fiction for readers of plays and other genres, capitalizing on surprise successes, and publishing books for circulating libraries in order to make fiction a viable publishing enterprise.
