Abstract

Abstract:

At the center of this article stands a wooden cross made by a Georgian monk for the Monastery of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem, decorated with the Crucifixion on one side and the Legend of the Holy Wood on the other. The aim of the paper is threefold: to analyze the choice of medium and decorative program of the cross; to situate it within the medieval tradition of liturgical and cult instruments produced for specific loca sancta; and to examine it within the historical context and present circumstances of the monastery.
