Abstract:
This essay explores what it is to be "a woman who speaks." In so doing, it employs historical accounts of "La Malinche" (the indigenous woman who served as Cortés's interpreter as he colonized Mexico), Mesoamerican myth and history, 20th-century cultural scholarship, and personal memoir.
