Abstract

Abstract:

Kota Inoue, assistant professor of Japanese literature at Washington State University at Pullman, died in December 2016 in a car accident. We worked closely with him on this essay and are very sad that he could not see it in print. Many thanks to his partner, Nancy McLoughlin, and to his advisor, James Fujii, for helping us with the final submission. All of us at Cultural Critique are conscious of the terrible honor of bringing out the last publication of a committed, scholarly life, cut short too early.
