Abstract

Abstract:

Scholar Claire Chambers explores the main leitmotifs of the novel Home Fire, by Kamila Shamsie (2017). Chambers posits Shamsie's novel implicitly focuses on the relationship between the textual and the sonic, complicated by the novel's ability to listen to those people often disregarded or feared—in this case, radicalized jihadists. She ultimately concludes that Home Fire is a powerful confrontation of radicalization and terror, using text and sound to delve beneath spoken words to show their symbolic bearing.
