Abstract

Abstract:

South Africa, as a country, has been built alongside racial lines. This has developed several perspectives within society and academia. The first view suggests that we need to be colour blind and argues that race does not matter. More specifically, race and race talk should not matter in the current South African society as we have gone past the apartheid era. The second perspective argues that race still matters and has a role to play in our society as seen in resolving race related social issues through remedies like affirmative action. In this paper, I seek to revisit the two racial camps to capture their perspectives on the relevance of race in our society. I will then contend from a ‘Born Free’ perspective that race as it is currently used in government statutes does not contribute anything positive in this society.
