Lithuanian Piano Rolls: Collections and Research

Lithuanian piano rolls are part of a large and still-neglected field in the U.S.: the musical heritage to be found on ethnic piano rolls. During the last ten years, the author discovered and researched several hundred Lithuanian piano rolls in order to determine their significance. These rolls are held mainly in U.S. Lithuanian archives, with additional examples located in several academic libraries. All Lithuanian rolls were issued in a relatively short time, from 1916 to 1931 by various companies, specifically U.S. Word Rolls, Connorized Music Company, Vocalstyle Song Roll, and especially Q-R-S. Lithuanian folk music (songs, dances) predominate, but this medium also includes numerous unique examples of Lithuanian art music composed by Lithuanian composers in the U.S.: Jonas Žemaitis, Vincentas Nickus, Antanas Vanagaitis, and Augustas Antpusaitis. Unfortunately, Lithuanian piano rolls in Lithuania itself are almost unknown, because of a lack of instruments to play them (player pianos) and the high price of the rolls. Only a few instruments and rolls were shipped before WWII from America to Lithuania, and only one roll has remained in a state museum during all the years since, having survived the Soviet Era. Consequently, these rolls were unknown to Lithuanian librarians and researchers up to 2006, when several collections of rolls were discovered in American archives.

Les rouleaux de piano lituaniens représentent un domaine toujours méconnu aux Etats-Unis: l’héritage musical retrouvé sur les rouleaux de piano ethniques. Au cours des dix dernières années, l’auteur a découvert plusieurs centaines de rouleaux de piano lituaniens et a effectué des recherches afin d’en trouver la signification. Ces rouleaux sont principalement conservés dans les archives lituaniennes aux Etats-Unis; certains exemples supplémentaires sont localisés dans les biblithèques universitaires. Tous ces rouleaux sont parus entre 1916 et 1931, et ont été construits par différentes entreprises, en particulier U.S. Word Rolls, Cannonized Musique Company, Vocalstyle Song Roll, et surtout Q-R-S. Il s’agit majoritairement de musique populaire lituanienne, mais ce média comporte également des exemplaires uniques de musique écrite composée par des auteurs lituaniens aux Etats-Unis: Jonas Žemaitis, Vincentas Nickus, Antanas Vanagaitis, et Augustas Antpusaitis. Mal-heureusement, les rouleaux de piano en Lituanie sont des objets inexplorés puisque les pianos qui permettent de les lire ont disparu et les rouleaux eux-mêmes sont coûteux. Seuls de rares exemplaires de pianos ont été exportés des Etats-Unis vers la Lituanie. Un seul rouleau, rescapé de l’époque soviétique, reste conservé dans un musée d’Etat. Ceci explique le manque de connaissances des chercheurs et des bibliothécaires en Lituanie avant 2006, année marquée par la découverte de ces rouleaux aux Etats-Unis.

Litauische Klavierrollen sind Teil eines weiten und weitgehend vernachlässigten Feldes in den USA, nämlich des auf Klavierrollen konservierten, ethnischen Musikerbes. Die Forschung des Autors aus den vergangenen zehn Jahren brachte mehrere hundert litauische Klavierrollen ans Licht, deren Bedeutung er somit einschätzen konnte. Die Rollen befinden sich überwiegend im Besitz von litauischen Archiven in den USA, aber auch in verschiedenen wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken. Die Rollen wurden innerhalb des relativ kurzen Zeitraumes zwischen 1916 und 1931 durch unterschiedliche Firmen wie U.S. Word Rolls, Connorized Music Company, Vocalstyle Song Roll und insbesondere Q-R-S veröffentlicht. Sie enthalten überwiegend litauische Volksmusik (Lieder und Tänze), aber es sind darauf auch zahlreiche Beispiele von Kunstmusik in den USA lebender, litauischer Komponisten zu finden, darunter: Jonas Žemaitis, Vincentas Nickus, Antanas Vanagaitis, and Augustas Antpusaitis. Mangels entsprechender mechanischer Klaviere und auf Grund ihrer hohen Preise sind Klavierrollen in Litauen leider mehr oder weniger unbekannt. Nur einige wenige Instrumente und Rollen sind vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg von Amerika nach Litauen verschifft worden, und nur eine dieser Rolle hat die Zeit – inklusive der Sowjet-Ära – in einem staatlichen Museum überstanden. Daher war litauischen Bibliothekaren und Forschern die Existenz der Klavierrollen in den USA bis zu deren Entdeckung im Jahr 2006 unbekannt.
