A society's health—and healthcare system—serves as a window into its soul. It sheds light on the balance of class power, on who the society privileges and who it lets die. The year 2017 ended with some somber news in this regard: life expectancy declined two years in a row for the first time in five decades. The events of 2017 also demonstrate that a new stage in fight for real universal healthcare has begun, as Republicans launched new assaults on Obamacare, and single-payer counter-programs reached new heights of popularity. The authors in our "Healthcare for All" write at this critical juncture, providing analysis, historical context, and strategy for today's movement for healthcare reform. The left will not live forever on the sidelines of political power. When we have an opportunity to remake our healthcare system, we must be sure to seize it.
