Lourdes Casal and Black Cubans in the United States: The 1970s and Beyond

This article looks at the work of Lourdes Casal as a social scientist. In particular, I examine a research project that she undertook with a colleague, Rafael Prohias, on Black Cubans in Miami. They studied a sample of Black Cubans in Miami and analyzed the 1970 US Census information for that population. The article here describes the methodology used in the study and the characteristics of the sample. One of the major findings is that, in the 1970s, Miami Cubans overwhelmingly identified themselves as Cubans first, Black second. In terms of social psychology, this identification gave Black Cubans social gains. After the untimely deaths of both Casal and Prohias, Joaquin Carrasco, a student of Prohias, completed the Miami manuscript. I then finished an article that Casal had started, based on that full research project, for a Smithsonian publication. I base the discussion of the article that follows on Casal's Smithsonian article. The article also features a section on Cuban migration to the United States since the 1980s and the place of Black Cubans in these migratory movements.
