Abstract

Abstract:

This paper analyzes select articles from the Korea Daily News and the Daehan Maeil Shinbo (1904–10), which were owned and edited by Ernest T. Bethell, a British national. I investigate the ways in which these papers contributed to the proliferation of anti-colonial discourses in Korea, demonstrating how they functioned as an extraterritorial rhetorical space where Koreans could subvert the imperial logic that reduced them to inferior subjects who must be "improved" by Japan.
