Thinking the Mediterranean with Lalla Maryama

This special section of Third Space, "Dissident Subjects: In Honor of miriam cooke," is composed of seven essays and a poem initially prepared for an international conference held at Duke University on April 6–8, 2017. The conference was organized by faculty and staff in the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and the Duke Middle East Studies Center to recognize cooke's contributions on the occasion of her retirement. The two-and-a-half-day event included performances, an art exhibit, and presentations on thematic panels by colleagues, friends, collaborators, and former students. The selected pieces offer original essays that build on cooke's concerns or reflect on her multifaceted career, which includes intellectual production and institution building.
