As the title lettering of Mama’s Business Trip Bunny’s Staycation suggests, Mama is going away, and Mama’s little bunny isn’t happy. Fortunately, Papa is at the ready with reassurance and a creative alternative: a “grand adventure” of Papa and Bunny’s own, which involves imaginatively decorating areas of the house and yard each day for travels to a sunny shore, a wintry spot, a “safari adventure,” and so on, culminating in a festive “Camp Mama” to celebrate Bunny’s mummy’s return. The present-tense text, which neatly and naturally avoids committing to a gender for Bunny, has a pared-down immediacy suitable for very young listeners, and Bunny’s enjoyment of these homey expeditions is realistically counterpointed by the occasional missing-Mom meltdown. Ink, watercolor, and digital art makes the bunny family robustly drawn, slightly cartoonish figures, with a dimensionality that suggests layering as they move amongst their gently colorwashed and pattered backgrounds. A pleasingly proactive complement to Bradley’s Love, Mama (BCCB 1/18), this could provide caretakers with some good ideas as well as reassuring youngsters with their own traveling loved ones.
