“Liturgy and Asceticism” SCL Annual Conference Report 2012 Esther Mary Nickel, R.S.M., Ph.D., S.L.D. The sixteenth annual conference and general meeting of the Society for Catholic Liturgy was held 26-28 January 2012 at the Cardinal Rigali Center in Saint Louis, Missouri. “Liturgy and Asceticism” was this year’s conference theme. Keynote Address Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke, former Archbishop of St Louis and now Cardinal Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura , delivered the keynote address, which will appear in a future issue of Antiphon. Plenary Session The plenary session, “Liturgical Asceticism,” was led by Dr David Fagerberg of the University of Notre Dame. Additional Presentations Conference papers were read over the course of ten sessions, each session consisting of two simultaneous presentations from which to choose. Ubel, Archdiocese of St Paul–Minneapolis, “Septem Psalmi Poenitentiales: History, Demise and Rebirth of an Ascetical Tradition” • Daniel Van Slyke, S.T.L., Ph.D., Kenrick-Glennon Seminary, St Louis: “Sexual Abstinence and the Reception of Holy Communion: A Brief History with Theological, Spiritual and Moral Observations” Liturgical Celebrations The liturgical celebrations were carefully prepared through the efforts of Society member Dr Horst Buchholz, organist and music director at the Cathedral Basilica of St Louis, and organist for the conference 80 Esther Mary Nickel, R.S.M., Ph.D., S.L.D. liturgies. On Friday evening, 27 January, Archbishop Robert Carlson celebrated Mass in the St Vincent de Paul Chapel of the Rigali Center (the former major seminary chapel of the archdiocese). He cordially welcomed the participants. On Saturday, 28 January, Cardinal Burke celebrated a Solemn Pontifical Mass in the extraordinary form (1962 missal). His Eminence was assisted by priests and seminarians of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest (ICRSS), which staffs St Francis de Sales Oratory in St Louis. All were invited to attend Mass at the Cathedral Basilica on Sunday. Society Business On Friday, 27 January, the Society held its meeting of full members. President James McCrery II conducted the meeting and gave his report from the meeting of the Board of Directors held the previous morning . Items of discussion included membership and the time of year for the annual conference. A few years ago, the Society had changed its conference time from September to January in order to accommodate meetings of other liturgical and professional societies.
