The essay provides a biographical overview of Sanford Gifford’s life and career as a psychoanalyst and writer. Gifford served as a psychiatrist in the U.S. Army during the Second World War. For several decades he was Director of the BPSI Library and Archives. In the 1960s Gifford was one of the first members of Physicians for Social Responsibility.
