Abstract

Dulcinea as a lady imagined by Don Quixote is the starting point of the extremely complex itinerary of this protean, contradictory and plural meta-character in whose creation a series of characters participate as they invent, imagine, evoke and re-create her. In addition, the character is fashioned on another metafictional level, that of intercalated or cited poetry and of paratextual poetic compositions referring to Dulcinea. This heterogeneous corpus of poems, varied in tone and genre, dispersed in both parts of the novel, constitutes what I have called “El cancionero de Dulcinea.” This poetic collection is indeed a literary technique instrumental in the character’s design.
