IN MEMORIAM: VLADIMIR VOEVODSKY 1966–2017 Photo courtesy of Andrea Kane/Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, NJ USA Vladimir Voevodsky was born in Moscow, attended Moscow State University, and received his Ph.D from Harvard University in 1992 under David Kazhdan. At the time of his death at the age of 51, he held the position of Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. In 2002, Professor Voevodsky won the Fields Medal for his development of homotopy theory for schemes including motivic cohomology, which was instrumental in his proof of the Milnor and the motivic Bloch-Kato conjectures. His recent work centered on foundational questions in mathematics including the quest for automated proof verification. The American Journal of Mathematics was pleased to welcome Professor Voevodsky as an associate editor in 2002, and was honored by his 15-year tenure with the Journal. ii ...
