Her second book of poems, Outlandish Blues, is forthcoming from Wesleyan University Press in 2003. She has won awards from the Rona Jaffe Foundation and the Barbara Deming Memorial.

music came from my mouth
I ain't never heard
such strong music
You the one gone save me
You the one gone take me
away from here
Lately a humming
coming from the other
corners of the house
The whispering
His walking in the night hours
His blood on the backs
of our daughters' skirts

reach those notes
Now I done forgot his tune
The man said a thief
done plucked my tongue
right from my singing throat
