We’re both looking at apples. I tell her it’s best to buy organic and she asks what that means. I explain Monsanto and all that, the poison in cotton and maxi pads. I offer to buy her a Diva Cup to decrease her carbon footprint. She tells me how refreshing it is to be so explicit—by which she means us talking about our body functions in a public place. But of course she’s still whispering, as though the green beans might be offended by us mentioning our own bleeding. [End Page 49]
