Sociology by Anthropologists: A Chapter in the History of an Academic Discipline in Newfoundland during the 1960s

L'Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) a été fondé dans le but de promouvoir les travaux de recherche sur Terre-Neuve. The Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) was founded as a means of promoting research about Newfoundland. Sociologists taught at Memorial University earlier than anthropologists, but key organizational leaders in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology as well as ISER were British anthropologists whose professional networks rarely included sociologists. Concentrating early ISER research on community studies also led to early "sociological" research being undertaken primarily by anthropologists. The article provides insight into the tension between sociologists and anthropologists at Memorial, as well as insight into the methods used in the community studies of Newfoundland in the 1960s.
