Abstract

Michael McCarthy clarifies the crisis contemporaneously consuming Venezuela. It is not merely a dependence on oil that serves as a hindrance but the nature of Venezuelan politics itself. President Maduro's leadership has served to worsen the economy and strengthen the military. What the future holds is unclear, but the implications for US foreign policy, oil politics, and the Venezuelan people are significant.
